How Do I Keep Rats out of My House Naturally?

A rat is one of those unwanted visitors that you don’t want to have at home. However, they are capable of invading your home at any time, especially during the winter. A rat or mouse infestation can wreak havoc on your home life. It is not uncommon for them to chew through insulation, walls, and even electrical wiring. Furthermore, they can spread infectious diseases to you and your family. Listed below are some of the most effective and simple home remedies.

Essential Oils

Among the safest and most natural ways to eliminate rats are essential oils. Included in these are:

  • Eucalyptus
  • Citronella
  • Peppermint

Rats are discouraged by the strong smell of these oils. When rats are exposed to these essential oils at a concentration of 5-10%, it can be highly effective. If you have cats or dogs, however, be aware that some of these oils can be toxic to them.

Ammonia

Due to its pungent smell, ammonia is not only an excellent cleaning agent but also a highly effective rodent repellent. Prepare 2 cups of ammonia, 2 spoons full of detergent, and 200 ml of water. Put all the ingredients in a bowl and place it where rats are likely to congregate.

Rodent Traps

It might be necessary to use rat traps if these gentler methods don’t work. Catch-and-release traps are humane mouse traps, but if it still doesn’t work, consider traps that act as home remedies to kill rodents.

As rats are so much larger than mice, a small mouse trap will not be effective against them. A glue trap or a traditional snap trap should be large enough to stop rats.

If none of these remedies seems to work, and your pest infestation seems to escalate by the day, the only way is to call a pest control specialist like Pest Control Pros. For more information or to request a quote, get in touch with the team today.
